Creating a Culture of Health from a Culture of Health Disparities
Welcome Message

Preventive Medicine 2020 Online brought together leaders from medicine and public health to examine the most pressing issues in healthcare today, and how the Nation’s healthcare system can be transformed around prevention. This virtual meeting offered high-quality medical education programming, networking opportunities, and the recognition of the best in the profession.

The meeting was organized around critical topics including innovations in community health, public health policy, evidence and practice, health systems transformation and lifestyle medicine. Each meeting day was themed around two critical topics, with distinct sessions addressing shared themes in the practice of prevention.

Preventive Medicine 2020 Online focused on big, bold, upstream ideas and the people, places, and programs that are making them a reality today. Transformation is only possible with a clear vision, audacious goals, an innovative mindset, and the will to implement new policy and practice, honestly evaluate change, and engage stakeholders at every level.

Overview
Race-based inequities have a profound influence on health creating disparities in chronic disease and infectious disease outcomes, injuries and experience of violence, and mental and behavioral health outcomes. Race-based inequities also result in disparities of health care access: insurance coverage, primary care access, and receipt of clinical preventive services including screenings and vaccinations. Further, race-based health disparities are found in measures of lifestyle – such as a healthy diet, physical activity, and avoidance of substances. ACPM President, Dr. Stephanie Zaza, will engage Dr. Richard Besser, President and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, in an in-depth and upstream discussion about how racial inequities drive disparate behavioral, access, and health outcomes and identify strategies to eliminate racial injustice in society, medicine and public health to achieve greater equity.
Outcome Objectives
  • Describe how education and income inequality drive overall poor health outcomes and disparities in health outcomes
  • Describe how housing and food insecurity are related to poor health outcomes and disparities in health outcomes
  • Describe at least one policy that has systematically created racial inequities in education, income, housing or food security.
  • Describe one step health or medical organizations can take to begin to identify and eliminate structures of racial inequity and injustice.
