"Media and Messaging: Using Journalism to Make Health Messages More Effective"
Medical and scientific writing is often above the reading level and comprehension of the larger population we need to reach as leaders in public health. My experience in medical journalism through an elective rotation (un-funded) at ABC News Medical Unit has taught me the fundamentals of writing clear, concise and accurate health messaging through digital articles and on-air scripts that reach millions of viewers. I have been volunteering my time at ABC News since May 2021 working behind-the-scenes with shows like Good Morning America and World News Tonight to synthesize studies, write and edit scripts and digital article content, as well as social media content. I want to use this session to give examples of effective health messages I've written and produced as well as teach the audience how to take evidence-based research and turn it into a script or headline. The elements of effective messaging will include avoiding medical jargon, are at an 8th grade reading level or lower, use active voice, and lead with the takeaway instead of burying it in the middle. I would like to use at least half of the time doing skills based small groups that are interactive with the larger group at the sessions conclusion so everyone can learn together and from one another.
