Opening Session: State of the College and Dr. Katharine Boucot Sturgis Lecture
Description
As the 2023 recipient of the Dr. Katharine Boucot Sturgis Award, Dr. Jonathan Fielding will articulate the important role of preventive medicine physicians in reducing morbidity and mortality through research, public policy, clinical care, population health initiatives and public health strategies. He will trace the 40-year history of international collaboration between the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care and the United States Preventive Services Task Force. He will discuss the unique competencies of preventive medicine physicians to create and disseminate solid scientific evidence to inform both clinical and population health decision-making. In addition, Dr. Fielding will address ACPM’s critical role in battling misinformation and disinformation around COVID-19, climate change and other health threats and conditions.
Learning Objectives
Describe the importance of international collaboration in preventive medicine as demonstrated by the work of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care.
Differentiate the competencies of preventive medicine physicians from other medical specialists in developing evidence-based clinical recommendations to reduce morbidity and mortality.
Identify the unique role of preventive medicine physicians in battling misinformation and disinformation related to COVID-19, climate change and other diseases and conditions.
