ACPM is offering an engaging global health webinar that brings together leaders and experts to explore the pressing health challenges shaping communities worldwide. This interactive session will highlight lessons learned from diverse healthcare systems and showcase the critical role of preventive medicine physicians in advancing global health leadership.

Outcome Objectives
  • Describe the role of preventive medicine physicians in advancing global health leadership through longitudinal service and policy engagement. Analyze lessons learned from international health experiences with respect to sustainability, humility, and cultural competence.
  • Evaluate the challenges and opportunities of global health practice, including misinformation, re-emerging infectious diseases, chronic disease burden, and pandemic preparedness.
  • Discuss strategies for balancing personal resilience and professional responsibilities to prevent burnout in global health careers.

Mark E. Humphrey, MD, MPH, FAAFP, FACPM
Dr. Mark Humphrey is a physician-leader with a deep commitment to global health, preventive medicine, and medical education. He currently serves as the Program Director of the Prisma Health - University of South Carolina Preventive Medicine Residency and the Associate Fellowship Director for the Family Medicine Global Health Fellowship at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and Prisma Health. Since 2014, he has mentored medical students, residents and fellows in applying public health, quality improvement, and program evaluation tools in international settings.

Dr. Humphrey has directed global health training sites in Nicaragua, Cyprus, Costa Rica, and Honduras, where he has helped shape culturally responsive, community-engaged learning experiences. His scholarly work includes publications on hypertension management, point-of-care ultrasound, and community health assessments in low-resource settings. Prior to joining the University of South Carolina and Prisma Health, he served in the US Navy. During his stint on active duty, he served as the lead preventive medicine planner for Pacific Partnership 2011, a major U.S. Navy humanitarian mission to the South Pacific.

Dr. Humphrey integrates global health insights into local practice through Community Medicine rotations for Family Medicine and Preventive Medicine residents. He partners with the Prisma Health Office of Community Health and serves as Medical Director of the Midlands Mobile Unit, expanding care to underserved communities. His past initiatives include leading the federally funded “Physicians Fighting Food Insecurity” program, which addressed food access challenges in Richland County, South Carolina.

Lawrence Loh, MD, MPH, FRCPC, FACPM
Lawrence Loh is a public health and physician leader with senior-level experience at all three levels of government in two Canadian provinces, and within the non-profit sector as the sixth Chief Executive Officer for the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

Best known for his work during the COVID-19 pandemic, Loh’s leadership has been recognized with a Key to the City of Mississauga, a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, an honorary degree from Toronto Metropolitan University, and recognition on Toronto Life 2021 list of the Top 50 Most Influential Torontonians. 

Holding fellowships in family medicine in Canada and public health and preventive medicine in Canada and the United States, Loh completed MD training at Western University, an MPH at Johns Hopkins, and residency at the University of Toronto, where he remains an adjunct professor.
Living in Toronto with his wife and daughters, Loh is an energetic extrovert and connector, infusing his engagements with optimism and a passion for storytelling. He is committed to building a healthier and fairer world through written and spoken word, listening, and collaboration, drawing on lessons from his diverse leadership experiences

Rachel Idowu, MD, MPH
CAPTAIN Rachel Idowu, MD MPH, as a commissioned officer in the
United States Public Health Service, began her role as the CDC Liberia
Country Director and Division of Global Health Protection Program
Director in Monrovia Liberia in July 2021. During her time as Country
Director, Liberia has successfully navigated the complexity of scaling
of COVID-19 vaccination in a country with significant geographic
access challenges, achieving the distinction of being one of only a few
African countries achieving close to 80% population coverage. During
her tenure, CDC Liberia is championing completion of construction of
a public health national reference laboratory, transition of Liberia´s
flagship Field Epidemiology Training Program to government ownership, and introduction of a longitudinal
digital vaccine registry.

Prior to Liberia, she served as the Branch Chief for Adult HIV Care and Treatment in Maputo, Mozambique.
In this role, she was responsible for designing and managing clinical services designed to link over one
million people living with HIV to life-saving anti-retroviral treatment while ensuring those already on
treatment stayed on treatment in order to achieve viral suppression.

Rachel also served as the first Technical Advisor to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention
(Africa CDC) to establish a Surveillance and Response Unit and five Africa CDC Regional Collaborating
Centres. Her other roles at US CDC have included serving as a Medical Epidemiologist supporting national
public health institute development in Liberia, Ghana, and Zambia, as well as responding to public health
and humanitarian emergencies in Mozambique, South Sudan, Chad, Tanzania, Liberia, and Ethiopia.
Rachel´s undergraduate, medical, residency, and post-graduate studies were completed at the University
of California (Berkeley), University of California (San Francisco), and Vanderbilt University School of
Medicine, respectively. She currently serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Health
Policy.
