Senior Vice President & Chief Global Pharmacovigilance Officer

Dr. Mirza Rahman is the Senior Vice President & Chief Global Pharmacovigilance Officer at Otsuka Pharmaceutical Development & Commercialization (OPDC), Inc., where he is responsible for leading the pharmacovigilance function across the company. Additionally, Dr. Rahman has been responsible for leading Global Medical Affairs at OPDC in 2015.

Shortly after joining Otsuka in 2013, Dr. Rahman led the Otsuka Global Pharmacovigilance Reform Initiative, and currently leads all of Otsuka's pharmacovigilance operations globally. In addition to setting the strategic direction of the company with respect to pharmacovigilance, Dr. Rahman is responsible for the overall pharmacovigilance business function, while leading a team of more than 840 people globally.

Also, in 2013, Dr. Rahman created the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) Otsuka Pharmacovigilance Physician Program in Global Medical Safety. In addition, for the past 16 years, he has been a volunteer attending physician at the Bryn Mawr Family Practice Residency Program, where he teaches the residents about Evidence Based Medicine. He has also served as a faculty member for the ACPM Board Review course since 2008. Moreover, Dr. Rahman has been an Adjunct Professor at the Temple University School of Pharmacy, where he taught several courses in their Graduate Program on Pharmacovigilance, Pharmacoepidemiology, and Pharmacoeconomics.

Dr. Rahman joined Otsuka from Merck Research Laboratories, where he was an Executive Director in the Clinical Risk Management/Global Safety department. There, he led a team that performed global pharmacovigilance and risk management activities for more than 425 Merck products. Before this, he was a Worldwide Vice President, Health Economics & Reimbursement at Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, Johnson & Johnson.

Prior to practicing pharmaceutical medicine, Dr. Rahman was an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine, Epidemiology & Biostatistics, and the Ireland Cancer Research Center at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Preceding this, he served as the Medical Director of the Tri-Community Health Center in Suffolk County, NY.

Currently, Dr. Rahman serves as the Treasurer on the ACPM and is a member of the Executive Committee of the ACPM Board of Regents. He has served on the ACPM Finance Committee since 2010. He has also served or currently serves on several Governing Boards or Boards of Directors, including being the Treasurer, from 2004 to 2007, of the Governing Board of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine and the Secretary-Treasurer, from 1999 to 2002, of the Board of Directors of the Association of Teachers of Preventive Medicine Foundation.

Dr. Rahman earned his M.P.H. degree from Columbia University, his M.D. degree from the Stony Brook School of Medicine, and a B.Sc. degree from the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at City College of the City University of New York. He is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Preventive Medicine. In 2014, the ACPM bestowed upon Dr. Rahman, their highest honor, the ACPM Distinguished Service Award.
