Approximately 7 in 10 Americans have a diet related chronic disease, such as diabetes, hypertension, or obesity. At the direction of the leadership of the US Public Health Service, officers are now required to receive 4 hours of annual continuing education about nutrition, for the purposes of counseling patients, developing food and nutrition related policy, and ultimately contributing as a Service to reversing the epidemic of chronic disease. Subject matter experts who contributed their scientific expertise to the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines were asked to contribute evidence-based lectures.
Learning Objectives
  1. Describe major changes in the 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and their implications for nutrition-focused health promotion.
  2. Differentiate the strengths and limitations of observational studies and randomized controlled trials when evaluating nutrition evidence and translating research findings into dietary guidance.
  3. Identify evidence-based approaches to improving dietary quality, including recommendations regarding whole grains, fiber-rich foods, and sugar-sweetened beverages, and characteristics of highly processed diets that may adversely influence energy (calorie) intake, body weight, and metabolic health.
