Bio of Rhonda Lizewski
Commander Lizewski grew up in Baltimore City, MD. She graduated from the University of Maryland, with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology. She accepted the Naval Health Professions Scholarship Program and graduated from Tulane Medical School in New Orleans in 2004. Following medical school, she completed a Family Practice Internship at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. From 2005 to 2007, she served as a General Medical Officer (GMO) aboard the USS Bonhomme
Richard (LHD 6) and was responsible for the primary care of over 2000 crewmembers.
CDR Lizewski completed her Preventive Medicine Residency at Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health in 2009. In 2010, she reported to the Navy Environmental Preventive Medicine Unit No. 2 (NEPMU-2) and deployed as an Individual Augmentee (IA) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn. Following her deployment, she returned to NEMPU-2 assigned as Department Head, Threat Assessment, leading multiple outbreak investigations and providing Force Health Protection recommendations to the Fleet.
In 2011, CDR Lizewski reported to the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center (AFHSC) in Silver Spring, MD as the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard Liaison. During her time at AFHSC, she provided health surveillance analysis, in addition to being the official DHA Change Agent, representing service equities, and balancing the need for shared services to enhance quality while adding value.
In 2014, she was hand selected for assignment at the Navy Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3) in Cairo, Egypt as the Residency Advisor for the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP). She advised the Ministry of Health on epidemiology training and assisted in Ebola response.
In 2016, she reported to the Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center (NMCPHC). There she served as the Department Head for Programs and Policy Support in the Preventive Medicine Directorate. She also deployed as a Preventive Medicine Officer and GMO for Southern Partnership Station (SPS) to support SOUTHCOM’s Global Health Engagement initiatives with partner nations in Honduras and Guatemala. In addition to her duties at NMCPHC, the USNS COMFORT XO hand selected her as Director of Training and Readiness, where she served on the Medical Executive Committee and together with the Board of Directors planned and deployed on the Operation Enduring Promise 2018 mission.
In September 2019, she arrived at Navy Medical Research Unit No. 6 (NAMRU-6) in Lima, Peru where she leads the Bacteriology Department and its 23 host nation scientists and technicians with a $2.5 million budget at the only DoD command in South America. While TAD for COVID response she lead the Parris Island team of the COVID-19 Health Action Response for Marines (CHARM) study, alerting the Marine Corps to over 1100 cases of COVID-19. Study results were published in 5 journals and the team won the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Research, Development and Acquisition) 2021 Etter Award for Top Scientists and Engineers.
She joined the Navy Medical Research Command in 2022 and is currently serving as the Deputy Science Director, a special advisor to the Medical Research Enterprise Commander.
CDR Lizewski’s personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), Army Commendation Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards) and Humanitarian Assistance.
