Pdf Summary
This webinar, “Tools You Can Use,” presented by Miriam Alexander, MD, MPH, Medical Director of Employee Health and Wellness at Lifebridge Health, introduced practical management and quality improvement tools relevant to public health and healthcare leadership.

The session began with housekeeping notes, including completing a post-webinar survey, joining ACPM Pulse for continued discussion, and noting that the webinar would be recorded. The speaker disclosed no conflicts of interest.

The presentation organized management into four broad categories: strategy, operations, people and organization, and stakeholder experiences. It defined management as coordinating tasks, resources, and people to achieve organizational goals efficiently, and strategy as a long-term plan to reach a specific goal. Strategic planning tools discussed included SWOT analysis, PESTLE, Porter’s Five Forces, and the Balanced Scorecard. The Balanced Scorecard was highlighted as a way to measure performance using both financial and non-financial metrics.

The talk then addressed people and organization management, emphasizing the difference between managing individuals and managing systems to meet organizational objectives. Stakeholder management was discussed through the lens of external environment assessment, client satisfaction, board and financial stakeholder needs, patient satisfaction, and employee engagement.

A major section focused on problem solving and process improvement. The webinar outlined a public health problem-solving sequence: define the problem, measure it, analyze root causes, generate and prioritize projects, implement interventions, and evaluate outcomes. Root Cause Analysis and the “5 Whys” method were presented as tools to identify underlying causes.

For process improvement, the speaker contrasted static improvement with continuous quality improvement, introducing PDSA and Six Sigma’s DMAIC cycle. Project management tools included PERT and Critical Path Analysis. The webinar concluded with examples of healthcare tools such as EHRs, practice management software, patient portals, telemedicine platforms, clinical decision support systems, population health tools, and common healthcare communication/clinical methods like differential diagnosis, SOAP, SBAR, and line lists.
