US Surgeon Generals Advisory Warning On The Harms Of Screen Use

Pdf Summary
This document is a U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory warning that harmful screen use among children and adolescents has become a significant public health concern. It argues that screens are now embedded in daily life, exposure begins very early, and by adolescence many youth spend more time on screens than sleeping or in school.

The advisory says the evidence links excessive or poorly controlled screen use—especially social media, gaming, and algorithm-driven platforms—to harms in four main areas: cognitive and emotional development, physical and metabolic health, educational outcomes, and mental health/substance use. Reported risks include poorer language and attention development in young children, sleep disruption, reduced physical activity, obesity, myopia, lower academic performance, anxiety, depression, body image concerns, cyberbullying, self-harm, substance use, and online exploitation such as sextortion. It also raises new concerns about AI chatbots and gambling-like features in digital products.

The report emphasizes that evidence is still evolving and much of it is observational, but says there is already enough reason for action. It recommends the “5 Ds” for healthier screen habits: Discuss screen rules and content, Do model healthy behavior, Delay access as long as possible, Divert children toward offline activities, and Disconnect through screen-free times and spaces.

The advisory also gives recommendations for youth, families, schools, health care providers, researchers, policymakers, and tech companies. These include family media plans, device-free bedrooms, bell-to-bell school phone restrictions, better screening by clinicians, more long-term research, stronger privacy and safety laws, and product design that prioritizes child well-being over engagement.

Overall, the message is urgent but practical: reduce harmful screen use, expand offline life, and build safer digital environments for children.
